Good afternoon.

We have a problem with mould appearing on the underside of the mattress in our 60T. It is worst in the area above the Gaslocker/stroage locker directly underneath where our torsos lie. The mould forms on the mattress and the wooden top of the lockers. We have already had a replacement mattress from Giotti and despite cleaning the whole area thoroughly and using a layer of "DryMat" the mould has now formed on the new mattress also.

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so how did you resolve it please?

Hello Sean,
A lack of ventilation and/or a large temperature difference between the top and bottom surfaces may be the cause. Additional measures have already been discussed here in the forum.

E.G.: Hinterlüftung der Matratzen im Schlafzimmer

We have also had very good experiences with the Froli system, which both increases comfort and improves ventilation. Probably with a higher distance than DryMat because Froli cannot be compressed. If you do not rectify the cause, mould will continue to form.

We have been ventilating it every day during our summer stay in France, but the mould still came back. I have also looked at installing the Froli system so this might be the answer.
In the Giottivan 60T there are only slats in the middle section of the bed. See the attached picture.

Mould, especially in inexpensive campervans, is not an unknown problem. In addition to the ventilation of the underside of the mattress, you mentioned the gas box. The gas box is open at the bottom by about 100 square centimetres. This is a legal requirement. So you have an extra cold room here. If you have enough space above the gas bottles, you can stick 30mm armaflex into the box from the inside and thus insulate the area near the mattress.

I assume that the mattresses rest on the furniture panels despite DryMat? Then it's best to install Froli underneath. You can also install Froli on the centre slat as a separate element. Then the mattresses are completely ventilated. A person ‘evaporates’ 1/2 to 1 litre of water vapour per night. If there is no heating under the bed, there will be a strong temperature gradient at night. Especially if you switch off the heating at night. The water vapour then condenses at the transition from the warm mattress to the cold furniture top. And of course also at the transition from the mattress to the outer walls. I would therefore use DryMat all round. But in such a way that it cannot be compressed. Or the system from Hilger. See link above. Please report if and how you can solve the problem.

I have ordered the Froli system today. I need to source another new mattress now. I have put the problem back to Giotti so hopefully they will supply.
